On March 4, 2025, Confucius Institute at the University of Dhaka invited Prof. Dong Youchen, a renowned scholar and translator of Bengali literature, to engage in a discussion with young teachers and Bengali major students from Yunnan University.
During the event, Prof. Dong reviewed the development of Bengali language education and literature in China, sharing his experiences in learning Bengali and teaching Chinese. He emphasized that the essence of education lies in sincerity and practice, encouraging young teachers and students to draw inspiration from Tagore’s philosophy of universal love and strive for self-improvement. He also noted that more efforts are needed in the translation and research of Bengali literary works in China, urging the youth to boldly explore this field.
Students raised questions about Bengali learning and literary translation, discussing topics such as balancing meaning and rhythm in poetry translation, achieving "faithfulness, expressiveness, and elegance" in literary works, overcoming challenges in learning Bengali, and verifying materials for translation and creative writing. Prof. Dong highlighted that translation is a form of artistic recreation that should align with national cultural aesthetics, integrate strengths from Chinese literature, and innovate while respecting the original work.
This dialogue provided young students and teachers with a valuable learning opportunity, deepening their understanding of Bengali literature and translation, and inspiring their passion for further exploration in language and culture.
