Introduction / Background: The Dhaka University Library started as a part of the Dhaka University on the 1st of July, 1921 with 18,000 books inherited from the libraries of the former Dhaka College and Dhaka Law College. F.C. Turner, the former principal of Dhaka College was the first librarian of the Dhaka University Library and Fakhruddin Ahmed succeeded him in the post in 1922. At present the Dhaka University Library has 6 lacs 80 thousand books and magazines. Besides that the Library has 30,000 rare manuscript; 20,000 old and rare books and large number of Tracts (booklets, leaflets, pamphlets, and puthis). Some rare books and documents have also been collected in microform. In the same way, rare books and reports, puthis, Bengali Tracts and private collection of Buchanan on Bengal have been acquired from the British museum.
Description he Dhaka University Library comprises of three buildings: The administrative building, the main library building, and the science library building. The administrative building has the administrative offices, a book acquisition section, a book processing section, a reprographic section, a book binding section, a manuscript section, and a seminar section.
Main Library Building: The ground floor of the main library building consists of the office of the librarian (Planning and Development), borrower’s ID card production room, the computer workroom, server room, teacher’s circulation desk, OPAC browsing, rare books reading room, the bound periodicals desk, the reference room, the unbound newspaper reading room, the Muktijudho (War of Liberation) cell, and the UN corner. The Mezzanine floor of the Library displays current journals. The first floor of the Library includes reading rooms and stack books area of 12 disciplines viz. Sociology, Statistics, Political Science, Economics, Law, History, Biography, Geography, Journalism, Anthropology, Social Welfare, and Public Administration. The second floor of the library consists of reading rooms and stack books area for 11 disciplines viz. Library and Information Science, Philosophy, Psychology, Religion, Linguistics, Anthropology, Business Administration, English, Bengali, Arabic, Urdu and Persian.
Science Library Building: The Science library building consists of a circulation desk, reading rooms for students and faculty, a reprographic section, a reference section, a reading room for current journals, and a seminar section. It also stacks books area for the Faculty of Sciences and Applied Sciences.
Library Hours: The library reader’s service is open from Saturday to Friday. The Library remains open from Sunday to Thursday at 8 am to 10 pm. On Friday the Library remains open from 3 pm to 8 pm and on Saturday at 10 am to 8 pm
