‘Khuda Buksh Memorial Gold Medal’ introduced at DU
A new gold medal titled ‘Khuda Buksh Memorial Gold Medal’ has been introduced at the Department of Banking & Insurance of Dhaka University (DU). Muhammad Obaidur Rahim, the 3rd son of late Khuda Buksh who is living in USA handed over a cheque for Tk. 10 lac to DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique today (Wednesday), February 17, 2016 at the VC’s office to introduce the gold medal.
Professor of the Department of Economics of DU Dr. Barkat-e-Khuda and Deputy Registrar Shahena Akter were present on this occasion.
Out of the income of this donation, every year one meritorious student who will secure the highest CGPA in BBA Honors examination from the Department of Banking & Insurance of DU will be awarded ‘Khuda Buksh Memorial Gold Medal.’ Besides, one poor but meritorious students of the department will be given scholarship from this trust fund.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Arefin Siddique thanked the donor for introducing this gold medal at Dhaka University and hoped that the students would be highly benefited and encouraged from this donation. The VC also paid his glowing tributes to the memory of late Khuda Buksh.
It may be mentioned that late Khuda Buksh was born on February 1, 1912 at Damodya Village in Shariatpur District. He was the pioneer of life insurance industry development in Bangladesh. He is even referred to, in Bangladesh, as the “Father of Insurance.” Buksh started his career through joining the Oriental Government Security Life Insurance Company in Kolkata on December 1, 1935. After gaining 17 years of field experience, Buksh moved back to Bangladesh and joined the Eastern Federal Union Insurance Company Limited as a Manger. Khuda Buksh was the first Managing Director of Bangladesh Jibon Bima Corporation. He created a large number of field organization and produced a strong work force across the country. He married Zobeda Khaun in 1939. They had six sons and two daughters. He died on May 13, 1974 in Dhaka.
