A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the University of Dhaka (DU) and the Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS) was signed today November 16, 2015 at the VC’s office to build capacity for conducting scientific research on climate change issues in Bangladesh. Treasurer of DU Prof. Dr. Md. Kamal Uddin and Executive Director of BCAS Dr. Atiq Rahman signed the MoU on behalf of their respective institution.
Vice-Chancellor of DU Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique, Chairman of the Department of Oceanography Prof. Dr. Md. Kawser Ahmed, Acting Registrar Syed Rezaur Rahman and Fellow of BCAS Dr. Md. Abu Syed were present, among others, on this occasion.
According to the MoU, Dhaka University and BCAS will work together to attain the overall goal of ocean research and modeling. Both the institutions will conduct joint collaborative academic and research programs on climate change issues in the country. Besides, they will take immediate step to improve the capacity to understand and predict the sea level, ocean circulation, marine ecosystem, monsoon and climate variability in the coastal regions of Bangladesh and Bay of Bengal. The two institutions will jointly organize workshops and seminars in this regard.
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique thanked the BCAS authorities for signing the MoU. He hoped that the academic and research activities on oceanography in the country would be strengthened further from this initiative.
