Observance of the World Mental Health Day 2018: As like every year Department of Clinical Psychology, University of Dhaka, National Trauma Counselling Center (NTCC), Ministry of Women and Children Affairs andBangladesh Clinical Psychology Society (BCPS) jointly organized several programs on observance of World Mental Health Day 2018. Theme of this year of World Mental Health day was “Young people and Mentalhealth in a changing world”. To increase awareness about mental health in general people day long program was organized in 10th October 2018.
In the morning a seminar was conducted on “Young people and mental health in a changing world”where Chief Guest was Meher Afroz Chumki, MP, Honorable State Minister, Ministry of Women and Children Welfare. Special guests were Ms. Nasima Begum, NDC, Secretary, Ministry of Women and Children Welfare; Dr. Abul Hossain, Project Director, Multi-Sectoral Program on Violence against Women. Key note was presented by Md. Zahir Uddin, General Secretary of Bangladesh Clinical Psychology Society (BCPS). The seminar was chaired by Professor Dr. Muhammad Mahmudur Rahman, President of Bangladesh Clinical Psychology Society (BCPS). A large number of Students, Teachers and others professionals were present in the seminar.
Another seminar was conducted on “Sustainable Psychosocial support for Endangered Rohingya” where Chief Guest was Prof. Dr. Nasreen Ahmed, Honorable Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic), University of Dhaka. Special guests wereKamal Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Program Director, Nasirullah Psychotherapy Unit, University of Dhaka; Dr. Abul Hossain, Project Director, Multi-Sectoral Program on Violence against Women; Beatriz Ochoa, Human Advocacy Manager, Save the Children; Mohamed Elshazly, MHPSS Officer, UNHCR, Bangladesh; Olga Rebolledo, MHPSS Project officer, IOM. The seminar was chaired by ProfessorDr. Muhammad Mahmudur Rahman, President of Bangladesh Clinical Psychology Society (BCPS). A large number of Students, Teachers and others professionals were present in the seminar.
Special seminar was conducted in the afternoon named “Mental health development in Bangladesh” where Psychologist from different institution discussed on this issue.
On 9th and 13th October 2018, different workshops were conducted named Mindfulness, Autism, Family therapy, Neuropsychology etc.
5th Bangladesh Clinical Psychology Conference and 8th ICOPE (International Council of Psychology Educators) Conference: Department of Clinical Psychology, University of Dhaka and Bangladesh Clinical Psychology Society (BCPS) jointly organized 5th Bangladesh Clinical Psychology Conference and8thInternational Council of Psychology Educators (ICOPE) Conference on 22-25 March 2019 which was held in Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban, University of Dhaka. Theme of this conference was “Ensuring Quality Mental Health Care in 21st Century Bangladesh”where the Chief Guest was Professor Dr. Shahid Akhtar Hossain, Honorable Vice Chancellor, Eastern University. Special guests were Prof Dr. Hamida Akhtar Begum, Pro Vice-Chancellor, International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT);Professor Dr. Waziul Alam Chowdhury, President, Bangladesh Association of Psychiatrist (BAP); Dr. Graham Powell, Ex-President, British Psychological Society. The seminar was chaired by Professor Dr. Muhammad Mahmudur Rahman, President of Bangladesh Clinical Psychology Society (BCPS).
Psychological Assessment Clinic: Psychological assessments are crux of any standard mental health services. Aiming to serve the community people with the best practices of standard services the Clinical Psychology Department of Dhaka University has started a mental health assessment clinic from 1st October 2016. The Psychological Assessment Clinic has been started with the financial support of the Australian Government. This clinic provides the following mental health services like: General mental health assessment, IQ test, neuro-psychological assessment, personality test, professional aptitude test are some main areas of assessment services from the clinic. Dr. Farah Deeba, Nazma Khatun and Jobeda Khatun are taking care of this project. A psychologist: working in this clinic for providing the services. After starting the services we get remarkable responses from mental health services seeker.
Basic Counseling skills training:
To provide research scholarship for the M.Phil researcher’s different training programs were organized throughout the year by the initiative of Dr. Farah Deeba. Three trainings on basic counselling skills (29 September-01October2018, 02-04February 2019and 26-28 April 2019) were conducted. The coordinators of these training programs were Associate Professor Dr. Farah Deeba, Assistant Professor Jobeda Khatun and Senior Demonstrator Md. Abdul Awal.
Parenting Skills Training: A three day long Parenting Skills Training was held on 19-21 October 2018 for departmental students. Training was conducted by Dr. M. Kamruzzaman Mozumder, Chairman & Associate Professor.
SPSS Training: On 20 November 2018, SPSS training was held for MS (Session 2018-19) students. Training was conducted by Dr. M. Kamruzzaman Mozumder, Chairman & Associate Professor.
Orientation Program: Orientation Program for MS (Session 2019-20) students was held on 26 November 2018.
Training on Advanced Counseling skills: Department of Clinical Psychology, University of Dhaka and Bangladesh Clinical Psychology Society (BCPS) jointly organized a three day long training on Advanced Therapeutic Counseling skills at 08-10 December 2018.
DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) Training: A day long training on Dialectical Behavior Therapy was held for M.Phil students (Session 2018-19) at 22 January 2019.
Training on Socratic Questioning: To increase the professional standard of MS (Session 2019-20) students a day long training on Socratic Questioning was held on 05 February 2019 which was conducted by Tarun Kanti Gayen, Clinical Psychologist and part time faculty.
Workshop on Burnout Managementt: A day long workshop on Burnout Management for MS and M.Phil students was held on 12 February 2019. Workshop was conducted by Jobeda Khatun, Assistant Professor and Salma Parveen, Clinical Psychologist and part time faculty.
Training on Trauma Assessment t& Management: To increase the professional standard of MS and M.Phil students a day long training on Trauma Assessment & Management was held on 19 February 2019. Training was conducted by Dr. M. Kamruzzaman Mozumder, Chairman & Associate Professor.
Training on CBT for Depression:Department of Clinical Psychology, University of Dhaka and Bangladesh Clinical Psychology Society (BCPS) jointly organized a three day long training on CBT for Depression at 15-17 February 2019.
Social Skills Training: To enhance the professional standard a daylong training was organized by the Department for MS students at 23 February 2019.
Training on Psychodrama: To increase the professional standard of MS students two day long training on Psychodrama was held on 26-27 February 2019.
MSskills training:To increase the professional standard of MS students (Session 2019-20), 10-daylong (08-18April 2019) skills training was organized by the Department of Clinical Psychology.
M.Phil skills training: To increase the professional standard 11-daylong (11-23 April 2019) skills training was organized by the Department.
Fresher’s Reception and Study Tour: Fresher’s Reception of MS (Session 2019-20) held on 04April 2019 and Study Tour held in Kulaura, Moulovibazar at 02-06 April 2019.
Bilkis Jahan and Mahbubul Haque scholarship: Retired professor of psychology Dr. Parveen Haque and his three siblings proposed to pay Tk 10 lakh to provide scholarships to MS students of this department in memory of their parents. The scholarship named as “Bilkis Jahan and Mahbubul Haque Scholarship”.
On this occasion, gave a check of Tk. 10 lakh to the chairman of the Department of Clinical Psychology in the presence ofthe Honorable Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Professor Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman in his office at 14 August 2018. Other teachers of the department were present on the occasion.
Activity of Nasirullah Psychotherapy Unit:
Department of Clinical Psychology, University of Dhaka initiated Nasirullah Psychotherapy Unit (NPU), a program ofthe Department as laboratory. From the initiation NPU is working at extra ordinary level by providing top quality service toward community with very affordable cost for all community members. This program is directly monitored and supervised by the Department of Clinical Psychology. With the vision of establishing psychotherapy society in the country NPU is restlessly working to provide psychotherapy service and arranging training, workshop, seminar, conferences and awareness program. The program got huge acceptance within mass people by creating opportunity of accessibility for all class of people and sometimes people from different location in the country take serial to have services from this unit. This unit also makes regular collaborations with different Government and Non-government organization to develop mental health training module and provide training accordingly.
This laboratory of the Department of Clinical Psychology provided regular counseling and psychotherapy services to community people as well as arrange mental health awareness and training program in last academic year. Last academic year (July 2018 to June 2019), the center was able to deliver psychotherapy service to 589 clients from 2031 people who asked for the service. Total number of 4578 individual sessions was provided by 8 psychologist working here under the supervision. Besides that, group therapy, anger management training, social skill training and mindfulness training was offered and conducted regular basis. The laboratory has very specialized services including child and adolescent psychotherapy on every Saturday, couple and family therapy on every Tuesday, Neuropsychological assessment and treatment on every Wednesday and Saturday, positive parenting training in every 2 months. This center provided training for the faculty, student, and researcher of clinical psychology department, Psychology Department, Education and Counseling Psychology Department of Dhaka University. These wide range training included Neuropsychology training, Systemic and Family therapy, Couple Therapy, Psychopharmachology, Brain injury rehabilitation, ethical and human right issues for mental health practitioner, psychodrama, mindfulness training was highly appreciated by the participant. This unit launched fifty videos in social media for online mental health campaign. Moreover, it is running a collaboration to develop counseling training module for counselors under BRAC Migration Program funded by IOM.
