A new gold medal titled ‘Prof. Dr. Fazlul Halim Chowdhury Gold Medal’ has been introduced at the Department of Chemistry of Dhaka University (DU). Mrs. Shamsun Nahar Chowdhury, wife of former Vice-Chancellor of DU Prof. Dr. Fazlul Halim Chowdhury handed over a cheque for Tk. 6 lac to DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof. Dr. Shahid Akhtar Hossain today (Monday), January 4, 2016 at the Vice-Chancellor’s office to introduce the gold medal.
Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof. Dr. Nasreen Ahmad, Chairperson of the Department of Chemistry Prof. Dr. Nilufar Nahar, daughter of late Prof. Dr. Chowdhury Prof. Dr. Sadeka Halim and other family members of the donor were present on this occasion.
Out of the income of this donation, every year one meritorious student who will secure the highest CGPA in BS Honors examination from the Department of Chemistry of DU will be awarded ‘Prof. Dr. Fazlul Halim Chowdhury Gold Medal’.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Arefin Siddique thanked the donor for introducing this gold medal at Dhaka University and hoped that the students would be highly benefited and encouraged from this donation. The VC also paid his glowing tributes to the memory of the former Vice-Chancellor of DU Prof. Dr. Fazlul Halim Chowdhury. He also recalled the outstanding contributions of Dr. Fazlul Halim Chowdhury to develop education and research at the university.
It may be mentioned that late Prof. Dr.Fazlul Halim Chowdhury was born on August 1, 1930 at Kunja Sreepur village under Comilla District. He was the youngest son of late Abdul Aziz Chowdhury, an educationist and late Afifa Khatun, a house wife. He was a fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences and one of the longest-serving Vice-Chancellors of the University of Dhaka. He had served the Dhaka University as a Vice-Chancellor from 1976 to 1983. He was a Professor of DU Chemistry Department. Later, he had joined the Department of Chemistry and Applied Chemistry of Rajshahi University. He had also served the University Grants Commission as a member. He was the Senior Advisor of UNESCO, New Delhi. He made pioneering contributions to the development of physical chemistry in Bangladesh. He had published more than 20 articles on scientific research. He obtained both B.Sc. Honors and M.Sc. degrees from the Department of Chemistry of the University of Dhaka. He did his PhD from the Manchester University of UK. He died on April 9, 1996 in Dhaka.
