Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka Karu Jayasuriya M.P. called on Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique today June 4, 2016 at the latter’s office of the university. The Speaker was accompanied by Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake and High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Bangladesh Yasoja Gunasekera.
During the meeting they discussed matters of mutual interest specially education system and socio-economic development in Bangladesh. The possibilities of undertaking joint collaborative academic and research programs by the University of Dhaka and higher educational institutions in Sri Lanka were also discussed in the meeting. They stressed the need for exchange of teachers, students, researchers and scientists among DU and Sri Lankan universities. The Speaker said an excellent friendly relation between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka has been prevailing for a long time. The VC Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique apprised the Sri Lankan Parliament Speaker of a brief history of Dhaka University as well as Bangladesh. Three million people of Bangladesh including DU teachers and students were brutally killed by the barbaric Pakistan Army during our Liberation War in 1971, he informed.
Later, DU VC Prof. AAMS Arefin Siddique took Sri Lankan Parliament Speaker and other members of the delegation to the Central Shaheed Minar where they paid homage to the Language Movement heroes by placing floral wreaths. It may be mentioned that the Sri Lankan Parliament Speaker is now on a 4-day official visit to Bangladesh.
