A three-day long 8th International Plant Tissue Culture & Biotechnology Conference on “Biotechnology for innovative Agriculture and Food Security ” began today December 3, 2016 at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban Auditorium of Dhaka University (DU). Bangladesh Association for Plant Tissue Culture & Biotechnology (BAPTC & B) organized the event. Science and Technology Minister Architect Yeafesh Osman inaugurated the conference as the chief guest.
President of BAPTC & B Prof. Dr. Mozammel Haque presided over the function while Vice-Chancellor of DU Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique, Vice-Chancellor of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Prof. Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahamed and Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science & Technology University, Gopalganj Prof. Dr. Khondoker Md. Nasiruddin addressed it as special guests. General Secretary of BAPTC & B Prof. Dr. Sheikh Shamimul Alam delivered welcome speech.
Science & Technology Minister Architect Yeafesh Osman stressed the need for upgrading biotechnology research to ensure food security in the country. He emphasized on introducing joint collaborative research programs on biotechnology among the researchers of different countries.
DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique said, plant tissue culture techniques have now emerged as a major industrial factor in the area of plant propagation, disease elimination, plant improvement and production of secondary metabolites. He urged the scientists to work together for upgrading scientific and technological status of the country. He said the faculties and the researchers of Dhaka University are relentlessly working for scientific innovation, technological expansion, economic development and human resource in the country. The VC paid his glowing tribute to the memory of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the month of victory.
It may be mentioned that teachers and researchers from different countries including Bangladesh, India, Bhutan, Nepal and UK are participating in the conference.
