Three meritorious students of the Faculty of Social Science of Dhaka University (DU) have been awarded 'Nujhat Jahangir Memorial Scholarship’ for securing the highest CGPA in BSS Honors examinations of 2015. Awardees are Md. Islamul Haque (Economics), Sheikh Rokiya Hasan (Sociology) and Anika Intesar (Anthropology). Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique distributed scholarships among the students as chief guest at a function today, February 05, 2017 at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of the university.
Treasurer of DU Prof. Dr. Md. Kamal Uddin presided over the function while former Home Minister Dr. Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir MP, Chairperson of the Department of Economics Prof Dr. Nazma Begum, Chairman of the Department of Sociology Prof. Dr Nehal Karim, Acting Chairperson of the Department of Anthropology Dr. Farhana Begum, husband of late Nujhat Jahangir and donor of the Trust Fund Prof. Dr Borhanuddin Khan Jahangir and Donor's son Prof Dr Nadim Jahangir addressed it. Professor of DU History Department Dr. Muntassir Uddin Khan Mamoon delivered welcome address. DU Acting Registrar Md. Enamuzzaman conducted the program.
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique congratulated the awardees and thanked the donor of the trust fund. He urged the students to equip themselves with the humanitarian values to make Bangladesh a peaceful country.
Later, former professor of DU Political Science Department Dr. Borhanuddin Khan Jahangir handed over a cheque for Tk.25 lac to DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique to set up "Professor Dr Helal Uddin Khan Shamsul Arefeen Trust Fund” at the Department of Anthropology. Dr Helal Uddin Khan Shamsul Arefeen, a former professor of DU anthropology Department died recently at the age of 68. It may be mentioned that Dr. Arefeen was the younger brother of Dr Borhanuddin Khan Jahangir.
