A two-day long international workshop on “Development of Novel Antibiotics to Tackle Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)” has begun March 24, 2019 at CARS auditorium of Dhaka University (DU). Vice-Chancellor of DU Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the workshop as the chief guest. The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry of DU organized the workshop.
Chairman of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry Prof. Dr. Md. Khalid Hossain presided over the inaugural function while Chief Editor of Herbal Medicine Journal of the University of East London, UK Dr. Barbara Pendry and Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy of DU Prof. Dr. SM Abdur Rahman addressed it as special guests. Professor of the University of East London Dr. Mukhlesur Rahman also addressed the program. Coordinator of Workshop Prof. Dr. Md. Abdur Rashid delivered welcome address.
DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman stressed the need for creating awareness about misuse of antibiotics among the general people. He said, we are becoming antimicrobial resistance due to misuse of antibiotics. He emphasized on strengthening monitoring and management systems of drugs to reduce antimicrobial resistance in Bangladesh. Terming the antimicrobial resistance as a serious issue around the world the VC urged the doctors to play an effective role for promoting rational use of antibiotics. He underscored the undertaking joint collaborative research by national and international experts as well as pharmacists to develop new antibiotics.
It may be mentioned that academicians, researchers, pharmacists and scientists from different countries including Bangladesh, India and UK have participated in the workshop.
