Bureau of Economic Research (BER) and Department of Economics of Dhaka University (DU) have jointly organized a 2-day long International Conference for Economists 2019 on “Inclusive Growth for Sustainable Development” at DU. The aim of the conference is to bring together academic researchers to promote and exchange ideas in the field of economics and development.
The inaugural function of this conference was held today, 6 July, 2019 at DU Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury auditorium. DU VC Prof. Dr Md. Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated it while Planning Minister M. A. Mannan, MP attended the inaugural session as the chief guest. The inaugural session was also addressed by Chairperson of DU Economics Department Prof. Shafique-uz-Zaman, Chairman of Bureau of Economic Research Prof. M M Akash and Director of Bureau of Economic Research Prof. Dr. Nazma Begum.
DU VC Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman thanked Economics Department and Bureau of Economic Research for holding this international conference as a part of DU programs to celebrate Bangabandhu’s birth centenary, Golden Jubilee of our Independence and founding centenary of Dhaka University in a befitting manner. He said, economists, researchers and academicians of both home and abroad will share their experiences and findings of researches through this 2-day long international conference which will help ensure inclusive growth for sustainable development in Bangladesh.
Planning Minister M. A. Mannan urged economists, researchers and scholars to conduct more researches to achieve inclusive growth for sustainable development in Bangladesh. He also urged them to come forward with research proposals to concerned ministry of the govt. He assured them of providing all sorts of help and cooperation on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government in this regard.
After the inaugural function two high-level panel discussion sessions were held today. The session on ‘Poverty and Inequality’ was chaired by Prof. Wahiduddin Mahmud where Prof. S. R. Osmani, a veteran economist from the University of Ulster, UK presented the keynote paper. Prof. Dr Atiur Rahman and Prof. M M Akash were present as the distinguished panelists there. The second session on ‘Trade and Regional Connectivity for Shared Prosperity’ was chaired by Prof. Mustafizur Rahman where trade experts from the region such as Prof. Dr Prabir De (India), Dr Parash Kharel (Research Director, SAWTEE) and Dr M Abdur Razzaque (former Head of International Trade Policy, Commonwealth Secretariat, London) were present as distinguished panelists.
A total of 30 papers will be presented by participants of home and abroad at this international conference.
