A seminar on “25 Years of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD): Accelerating the Promise” was held today, July 11, 2019 at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of Dhaka University (DU). DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the seminar as chief guest. The Department of Population Sciences of DU organized the event to observe the World Population Day.
Chairman of the Department of Population Sciences Prof. Dr. Mohammad Mainul Islam presided over the program while Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Prof. Dr. Sadeka Halim and Deputy Country Director of UNFPA Bangladesh Dr. Eiko Narita addressed it as special guests. Renowned economist Prof. Dr. Barkat-e-Khuda and Country Director of Population Council, Bangladesh Dr. Ubaidur Rob also addressed the function. Associate Professor of Population Sciences Department Md. Rabiul Haque delivered welcome speech.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman said, Bangladesh has some tremendous achievements in reducing of mortality rate and development of reproductive health. He stressed the need for giving more focus on poverty reduction, gender equality and development of skilled human resources to achieve sustainable development goals by 2030.
Later, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman distributed prizes among the winners of essay and debate competition.
