Prof. Dr. Md Abdul Malek joined on October 23, 2019 as Director of the Centre for Advanced Research in Sciences (CARS) of Dhaka University. Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman gave him this appointment for a period of three years.
Dr. Md Abdul Malek is a Professor of Microbiology at University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He graduated from the University of Dhaka with BSc Hons (Soil Science) in 1980 and MSc (Microbiology) in 1981, and joined in Department of Microbiology of the same University as a Lecturer 1987. Before joining the teaching post, he also served as Microbiologist in Quality Control Division at Fisons (Bangladesh) Ltd and Food Division at Bangladesh Freedom Fighters’ Welfare Trust. He was awaded PhD degree in Bioscience and Biotechnoloby from the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow, UK) in 1995 under the Commonwealth Scholarship programme. He returned to the Microbiology Department of Dhaka University for teaching as Assistant Professor followed by Associated Professor and Professor (since 2003). During that time, Dr. Malek served as Chairman of the Department of Microbiology, Chairman of the Department of Clinical Psychology, Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences, Provost of Shahidullah Hall & Amar Ekushey Hall, Member of Senate, Member of Academic Council and Members of Governing Bodies of several medical colleges affiliated with the University of Dhaka. He served Bangladesh Food Safety Authority, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, as founder Member (Public Health and Nutrition), and he also chaired Selection Committee for scholarships and fellowships of Ministry of Science & Technology. Dr. Malek supervised more than sixty thesis works related to microbiological hazards in foods, foodborne microbial disease, food spoilage, microbial biotechnology, environmental microbiology, public health, industrial microbiology, management of microbiological safety and quality of food at the MSc, MPhil and PhD levels, and several important papers have been published in reputed national and international research journals from his works. He also served the Bangladesh Society of Microbiologists as General Secretary and as President, Member of Board of Editors of Bangladesh Journal of Microbiology, and reviewer of research papers of reputed journals. He has extensive experiences in providing scientific advices on nutrition and food safety issues related to food policy, regulation and guidelines. He is Life Member of different scientific and social communities.
