A two-day long international conference on “Advances in Computational Mathematics” began today, May 27, 2017 at the A F Mujibur Rahman Ganit Bhaban auditorium of the university. Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated it as the chief guest. The Department of Mathematics of DU and South Asian University, New Delhi jointly organized this event.
Chairman of the Department of Mathematics of DU and Convener of Conference Organizing Committee Prof. Dr. Amulya C Mandal presided over the inaugural session while President of Bangladesh Mathematical Society Prof. Dr. Sajeda Banu and Professor of the South Asian University, New Delhi Dr. Ranjan K Mohanty addressed it as the special guests. Secretary of Organizing Committee Dr. Samir Kumar Bhowmik delivered welcome address. Associate Professor of DU Mathematics Department Dr. Chandra Nath Podder conducted the program.
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique stressed the need for upgrading the mathematics education right from the primary level of education. He said Mathematics is the most fundamental of sciences and serves not only as a basis for many other sciences but for the entire tree of knowledge. Mathematics is the bedrock upon which all else are built and expanded, he added. Education and research in mathematics can amply reduce many global uncertainties we confront today and can solve the emerging complexities of the contemporary world, he pointed out. Terming the scientific manpower as always resourceful manpower the VC said mathematical knowledge based society creates manpower with scientific and logical temper. At the present times, when dogmatism, irrational view and illogical behavior are gaining ground in many countries, pursuing mathematics has become highly relevant, he further said. He emphasized on the cultural dimension of mathematics to create rational views in human being.
It may be mentioned that renowned mathematicians from Bangladesh and India are participating in the conference.
