A two-day International Conference on “Visual South Asia : Anthropological Explorations of Media and Culture” began today, May 10, 2017 at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban auditorium of the university. Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated it as the chief guest. The Department of Anthropology of DU and the Department of Sociology of South Asian University, India jointly organized this event in cooperation with Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) .
Chairperson of the Department of Anthropology of DU Hasan A. Shafie presided over the program while Project Director of HEQEP Dr. Gauranga Chandra Mohanta addressed it as the special guest. Professor of Curtin University, Australia Dr. Bob Pokrant, Professor of Oxford University, UK Dr. Marcus Banks and Professor of South Asian University, India Dr. Dev Pathak addressed the function as the Guests of Honor. Professor of DU Anthropology Department Dr. Saifur Rashid delivered welcome address.
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique stressed the need for development of sense of truth pragmatism and said teachers, students and researchers have to seek truth, unearth truth, protect truth and fight for the truth. Visual character and visual presentation ensure truthful depiction of any event, issue, location or situation, he added.
It may be mentioned that renowned Anthropologists from Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, UK and Australia are participating in the conference.
